She looked fantastic in her blue jumpsuit, and I could tell she felt great. I was sitting at a table with a former coaching client I helped in her quest to find the right balance. It had been a while since we had seen or spoken to each other. I asked how she was doing and if the balance we had worked so hard on was still working for her. She answered with a resounding 'yes' and told me that something fundamental had changed in her life—she was no longer looking for that ‘one specific button.’
'Healthy Habits Button'
I was curious about what she was going to say. She talked about a magical button in her head that she always thought existed. A button that, once switched on, would make everything fall into place. That you would suddenly have the time and desire to exercise enough. That would make it effortless to avoid unhealthy food and automatically choose the healthy option. Her entire adult life, she had been convinced that there would come a moment when she would find and switch on that button. And that everything would be fine. Only, there was never a perfect moment. So, in a way, it was logical that she hadn’t 'completely' found that button yet… and thus not the right 'mindset.'
Stumbling
During our sessions, she realized that when it comes to healthy eating, exercising, and finding the right 'mindset,' there is no magical button. She learned to give herself space and to enjoy the process of finding her own balance. And she accepted that stumbling and making mistakes are part of it. Because it’s not about 'all or nothing,' or 'on and off,' but about gaining knowledge and discovering what does and doesn’t work for her. The 'this feels good, I can do this' feeling, along with the benefits it brought her, helped her to make her new habits her own. It gave her confidence and a certain peace of mind. Something she hadn’t experienced before.
Sustainable
It's important to realize that being successful in something doesn’t depend on finding a button. It’s all about taking small steps in the right direction and having a healthy and realistic mindset. Looking for lasting changes that truly suit you. Back to that jumpsuit. A bit much for me, but I was immediately inspired to dig out my old-school denim shirt and jeans the next morning. And wear it in a way that suits me ;).
