There's Something About New Beginnings
What’s going on?
I’m at the Pont Museum, and I walk into a dark room with several people staring at a large video screen. I find a spot with enough personal space where I can stand semi-nonchalantly and curiously turn to the screen. What’s going on?
Iceland
It turns out to be a video artwork by the Icelandic artist, Ragnar Kjartansson. On the screen is a 6-hour recording of the band The National playing just one song, "Sorrow." I come in halfway—and secretly think (possibly like you are now), um, okay, how boring is that? But nothing could be further from the truth.
Magical
The song has something melancholic and cool at the same time. The rhythm is slightly hypnotic, and the beginning and end blend beautifully into each other like a loop. Watching the seven band members each draw energy from this one song in their own way and play it repeatedly has something magical. They really 'play' with their instruments, musicality, and energy, giving the song a fresh and interesting sound each and every time.
There’s Something About New Beginnings
For me, the magic is mainly in the beginning. When the singer starts to sing again, I can’t look away. I’m intrigued by each new version of the song that the 'new beginning' offers and especially the new energy it releases. It reminds me of how, in your own life, you continually get the chance to start over and approach things differently. To make it work better or just differently, finding ways to release more or another kind of energy. All for yourself.
