Bloated
We left the restaurant where we just had dinner. My former colleague and I had a lovely evening, but he quickly got a bloated stomach. Maybe he ate too late, too much, or even too fast after an extra long workday. We split the bill, but for him, it comes with the uncomfortable feeling of having overeaten. As a result, he doesn't go home completely satisfied. Sound familiar?
Temptation
He actually wanted to choose chicken, fish, or vegetarian. But the temptation of tartare and a piece of red meat was just too big. It was presented at our table – as a one-time 'special' from the house – and beautifully served too. "Next time, I won’t choose meat or at least not for both the starter and main course," he said as we walked away. He rubbed his belly and looked disheartened, as if he had been 'tricked' again.
Choosing as a Skill
It's strange that you make a promise to yourself, and it turns out to be difficult to actually do it when the moment comes. To make the right choice, you need vivid memories of poor choices and their effects to remind you why you don’t want that anymore. So, they actually come in handy! Especially when you see it – maybe for the first time – as something you are consciously practicing.
'It’s Not All Bad'
The struggle with making choices is real. But that’s where the magic happens. How many of these experiences do you need? You tell me. It’s important to give yourself time – to make those less ideal choices a few times – and then slow down a bit more each time. So, you create space for yourself to reflect, with compassion for yourself, and eventually, without too much hassle, consciously choose that pleasantly satisfied feeling!
