How My Mom Started Eating Weird when on a Diet

As a child, I already found food fascinating. Especially when my mother decided to go on a diet. She would, for example, do an apple diet. Or she would bring home things we didn't normally eat. Including Slankie spreadable cheese with sambal flavor, smoked meat, crackers, and sugar-free cookies. Or she would make a kind of vegetable soup she called 'hospital soup'. A soup with lots of vegetables and little flavor, but with lots of 'Maggi' and half a Madame Jeanette pepper (both not included in the original recipe).

'Forbidden'

Mind you, she cooked normally for our family. Bami, nasi, or rice with chicken and vegetables - the Surinamese version of potatoes, meat, vegetables or BBR; brown beans with rice. But for herself? No, she didn’t eat that anymore because ‘she was on a diet’. The question was, for how long? Because she didn’t really enjoy what she was eating. And it was clear that although she tried very hard, she missed her 'own' food.

Familiar?

What we eat is part of who we are. That's not easy to erase. And at the same time, that doesn't mean you can't look for better, healthier options or combinations. And while you're at it, you can really brush up on your knowledge of what does and doesn’t work for your body. With your own food, of course. Because not everyone likes (Slankie sambal) spreadable cheese. And isn’t it true that when something is forbidden, the craving for it only gets stronger?

Search

Admittedly. It's not easy to start that search for yourself and find the lasting balance that works for you. But you don't have to do it alone. And once you've found it, you'll never have to 'diet' again to feel good, strong, and healthy! Isn’t that what we all strive for? Here’s a tip to get you started: with smaller portions, eating a bit slower, less frequently, and giving yourself a wink now and then, you'll get a long way.
